Smithtown man in possession of guns and fireworks arrested, police say

SMITHTOWN, N.Y. — A man was arrested Thursday in connection with possession of weapons and fireworks in Smithtown, Suffolk police said.

Officers executed a search warrant at a home on Pia Boulevard around 2:40 p.m., police said. The homeowner, Christopher Giancola, 52, had “multiple weapons and illegal fireworks” in the home, police said after conducting an investigation.

Police said they seized two assault rifles, two handguns, several high-capacity feeders and bullets. They also confiscated 15 boxes of fireworks, containing about 100 mortars, and two firework cakes, police said.

Giancola was charged with five counts of criminal possession of a weapon, five counts of second-degree criminal contempt, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of fireworks.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday.
