Small plane crash near Ocean Shores Municipal Airport injures 2

A single-engine plane crashed in a marshy area between the airport and North Bay Saturday afternoon, according to the Ocean Shores Fire Department.

OCEAN SHORES, Wash. — Two people were injured in a small plane crash near the Ocean Shores Municipal Airport Saturday afternoon, according to the Ocean Shores Fire Department (OSFD).

A single-engine plane crashed Saturday around 4:15 p.m. in a marshy area between the airport and North Bay, according to firefighters. First responders had to walk to the accident site because emergency vehicles could not drive through the area where the accident occurred.

Two people were trapped in the wreckage of the plane.

One person was airlifted to the hospital after Ocean Shores Fire crews extricated them from the plane and transported them to the airport. A second person was trapped by the wing of the plane and crews carried out a “complicated rescue”, firefighters said on social media.

This second person was also transported to the airport and taken to hospital by medics.

OSFD Deputy Chief Mike Mandella praised the work of medics and firefighters on scene, saying “they were impeccable.”

“In 47 years, both as a first responder and chief, this was one of the most impressive calls I have ever responded to. The strong teamwork of our teams, including Mayor Frank Elduen and City Administrator Scott Anderson, was integral to the success of the mission,” Mandella said.

Other agencies responding to the scene included the Ocean Shores Police Department, Grays Harbor Communications, Grays Harbor County Emergency Management, Grays Harbor Fire District 7 and the Hoquiam Fire Department .

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the accident, according to firefighters.
