SLED investigates deadly shooting involving deputies in Spartanburg County

PACOLET, SC (FOX Carolina) – The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office says a suspect is dead following a deputy-involved shooting Sunday evening.

According to the sheriff's office, officers were called to the Pacolet neighborhood at 7:44 p.m. in reference to a fight in progress. During the trip, dispatch was informed that the altercation was taking place in a swimming pool between intoxicated individuals and that shots were being fired.

When deputies arrived, they said they immediately took shelter in the forest. From there, they noticed gunshots being fired from inside a house. Dispatch was then notified, which triggered the response of supervisors, negotiators and additional deputies for support.

The sheriff's office said authorities established a perimeter and attempted to negotiate with the parties for about two hours. All attempts failed because the suspect simultaneously fired several shots in the direction of the police.

Authorities said the suspect then walked toward the road in a “very aggressive” manner and armed with a loaded gun.

“Unfortunately, officers at the scene were forced to discharge their weapons in response to the suspect’s actions,” the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies said the suspect was deceased and no deputies were injured.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been notified and will be investigating this incident.
