SLED announces charges against man accused of stabbing Greenville Co. K9

GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division announced charges Tuesday against the man accused of stabbing a Greenville County Sheriff's Office K9 before being shot during of an attempted arrest in May.

SLED said James Edgar Hopkins IV, 51, was charged with aggravated breach of peace, cruelty to a police dog and resisting arrest with a deadly weapon on June 3.

Hopkins was wanted on outstanding warrants, investigators said. Authorities did not specify what those charges were.

According to SLED, agents from the Greenville County Sheriff's Office and the Department of Homeland Security found Hopkins at a hotel on Wade Hampton Boulevard on May 13.

Officers attempted to arrest Hopkins outside the hotel using their Tasers and firing beanbag rounds, according to SLED.

Warrants said Hopkins stabbed the dog with a butcher knife before running into the parking lot of a nearby Bank of America.

Hopkins was then shot and killed by Greenville County deputies.

The dog, K9 Micky, required emergency surgery but has since returned home with his owner.

SLED said its investigation into the officer-involved shooting remains active and ongoing.
