Six injured in shooting in Crete

CRETE, Neb. (KLKN) — Six people were shot and killed in Crete Friday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. in the northeast part of the city, according to Nebraska State Police.

First responders found six people with gunshot wounds at a home near Crestline Drive and Parklane Street. The patrol said three of the victims were children.

The victims were taken to the medical center in the Crete region. Some have since been transported to other hospitals, authorities said.

The State Patrol said their injuries were not life-threatening.

“More than anything, we are grateful that all of the victims of the shooting survive,” said Capt. Sean Caradori of the State Patrol.

While on scene, officers heard a gunshot coming from a house across the street.

The SWAT team arrived with several armored vehicles.

Around 6:45 p.m., the SWAT team entered the home and found the suspect dead. He had been shot, authorities said.

Nearby Doane University was closed for about an hour.

“We have received reports of an off-campus incident in Crete and have secured all campus buildings out of an abundance of caution,” the university said on social media. “If you are on campus, we recommend that you stay indoors until we are given the all-clear.”

Police have not yet identified the victims or the suspect.

But someone who spoke to reporters at the scene, Joshua Morales, said one of the victims was his friend.

Morales said his friend's family was targeted by one of their neighbors.

He claimed the attack was racially motivated, saying the neighbor told his friend's parents to go back to their country.

“The dude just shot up the house, so I guess it was just a racist thing,” Morales said.

But authorities have not identified the suspect or said what the motive was.

The patrol is expected to release more information Saturday.
