Six expected to survive gunshot wounds in Crete shooting; suspect dead

CRETE, Neb. (KOLN) – Six people are expected to survive after being shot Friday at a home in Crete.

Six people were shot at a home near Parklane Street and Crestline Drive, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

Authorities received multiple 911 calls around 4:35 p.m. regarding a shooting in the area. Three adults and three children were found with gunshot wounds when authorities heard a gunshot at a nearby home.

Multiple agencies swarmed the standoff, including the Crete Police Department, the Saline County Sheriff's Office and the Nebraska State Patrol.

Officers eventually entered the neighboring home and found a suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Only one shotgun was found at the scene.

Authorities said the suspect lived at home alone. Capt. Sean Caradori of the Nebraska State Patrol said the relationship between the suspect and the victims is unknown and investigators are looking for a motive.

The victims were taken to several area hospitals, including Bryan West and Children's Hospital Omaha.

All six victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to survive.

Authorities never fired their weapons during the entire incident and no other injuries were reported.

Crete Police Chief Gary Young Jr. said the Lincoln Police Department is assisting in the investigation.

Doane University was locked down around 6 p.m., but has since been lifted. Nebraska State Police said the incident was resolved just before 7 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing and more information is expected to be released Saturday.
