Single shot fired at Macon County Fair, sheriffs investigate

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A single shot was fired Friday night at the Macon County Fairgrounds after a large fight broke out.

According to the Macon County Sheriff's Office, officers were off-duty at the fair when they saw the fight break out shortly before 9 p.m. They reacted, trying to break up the fight, when a single shot was fired by an unknown person.

No one was hit by the bullet. One person was slightly injured after being knocked down in the crowd.

Officials at the Macon County Fairgrounds posted changes on their Facebook “due to the severity of the events.” Changes include increased security, schedule changes, a closure of the fair's southeast gate for the remainder of the fair and a new rule that everyone 17 and under must be accompanied by a guardian legal.

“We greatly appreciate our first responders for handling things quickly and professionally,” fair officials added.

The Macon County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate and anyone with information regarding the incident should call them at 217-424-1319.
