Shower chances increase in metro Detroit as heat and humidity persist

Weather 4Warn – After a night with mostly cloudy skies and lows in the 60s, Tuesday will be warm and uncomfortably humid for many people.

Temperatures on Tuesday will climb into the mid to upper 80s. That's above the average temperature of 77 degrees, but below the June 4 record high of 95 degrees. However, the heat index will be near 90 degrees. This is what you will feel. Sudden showers or thunderstorms are possible with a mix of sun and clouds, but most areas should remain dry. The chance of rain will be slightly higher north of I-69.

It will be mostly cloudy Tuesday evening, with temperatures falling into the mid 60s.

Wednesday

An approaching cold front will give Southeast Michigan a chance for showers and thunderstorms beginning Wednesday morning and continuing through the night. Highs will be in the 80s. It will be muggy again with heat indexes near 90 degrees. The cold front will sweep through the area overnight. Lows will be in the lower 60s.

This is why it will be even hotter than the actual air temperature.

Why is it hotter on a humid day? When there is a lot of humidity in the air, the air is closer to saturation or has less room to add water vapor. This means that sweat from your body evaporates more slowly, limiting your body's natural ability to cool itself. [The process of evaporation (or turning from liquid to gas) requires heat energy, which draws heat from your skin.]

Stay hydrated.

THURSDAY

The air will be cooler and more refreshing as temperatures and humidity decrease Thursday, but a few showers will be possible in the afternoon and evening. Overall, the weather will likely be comfortable as people attend live from Detroit: the concert at Michigan Central in Corktown. Highs will be in the mid 70s or near normal. It will be partly cloudy at night, with lows in the mid-50s.

Friday

Friday: Skies will be partly to mostly cloudy, with a few showers possible. Cooler temperatures will only keep high temperatures in the upper 60s to 70 degrees. Lows will be in the mid 50s.

Weekend Forecast

Saturday and Sunday will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy, with highs in the mid to late 70s. A stray shower cannot be ruled out on either day.

Southeast Michigan is moving toward slightly cooler than normal temperatures for at least part of next week.
