Shots fired near central Kansas pool spark shootout with suspect

MINNEAPOLIS, Kan. (KCTV) – Shots fired near a central Kansas swimming pool led to a shootout between law enforcement and a suspect before the suspect was shot.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says that around 8:20 a.m. on Saturday, June 22, the pool manager at Markley Grove Park reported that three gunshots had been heard around the park.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said they arrived on scene around 8:25 a.m., along with the Minneapolis Police Department. When they arrived, they heard more gunshots.

Shortly afterward, the Kansas Highway Patrol said troopers also arrived on the scene when the shooter, Artemis Thor Peck, 46, of Minneapolis, fled. He fired his weapon at law enforcement officials and a surveillance drone.

Law enforcement said shots were fired in return and Peck was hit several times. He was taken to Salina Regional Health Center where he underwent surgery. He is expected to be flown to a Wichita hospital for more complex surgeries. He is expected to survive.

Investigators noted there were swimmers at the pool and campers in the park at the time of the shooting. No other injuries were reported.

KBI said it was notified of the officer-involved shooting around 9:55 a.m. and launched an independent investigation into the shooting. Once completed, the results will be sent to the Ottawa County, Kan., prosecutor for review. As a result, the pool and park were closed to the public on Saturday.

As of 4:15 p.m. Saturday, the investigation was still ongoing.
