Shoplifting in Cranston, Rhode Island, Police Shooting Arrests – NECN

Two people suspected of participating in a shoplifting incident that led a police officer to fire his weapon in Rhode Island were arrested Tuesday in Boston.

Investigators say it started in Cranston, Rhode Island, on Sunday when a store employee at the Garden City Mall reported shoplifting at the store. A license plate number and description of the vehicle were given to patrol officers, who located the vehicle approximately five minutes later on Reservoir Avenue. near the Route 10 access ramp.

Police say officers attempted to stop the car and ordered the driver, later identified as Michael Campagna, 24, of South Boston, to exit the vehicle. Police say instead, Campagna hit the gas, sped away and ran over an officer's foot.

The officer was transported to Kent County Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released.

A Cranston police officer fired his weapon during the confrontation, according to police.

Campagna and a second suspect, Megan O'Brien of Lynn, Massachusetts, were arrested Tuesday at the JFK MBTA station by U.S. Marshals and local agencies.

Once extradited, Campagna faces charges of battery, assault on a police officer, reckless driving, evading police officers, obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duty, resisting his arrest and conspiracy. O'Brien was charged with battery, assault on a police officer, aiding and abetting and conspiracy. Both also have warrants for shoplifting.
