Shootings in Peru and Maine Leave One Woman Dead; husband accused

Callers told law enforcement that a gun had been fired from a truck at a car, the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a statement Wednesday.

PERU, Maine — A man has been charged with murder in the death of his wife.

The Oxford County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of an accident on Tuesday to the area of ​​106 Auburn Road, Peru, around 7:10 p.m. Callers told law enforcement that a gun had been fired from a truck at a car, the Maine Department of Public Safety said in a statement Wednesday.

First responders found a blue Hyundai on the side of the road with a dead woman in the driver's seat. She was later identified as Dale Gaudreau, 59, the release said.

The Sheriff's Office and the Maine State Police Southern Major Crimes Unit investigated the incident and learned that David Gaudreau, 60, had called several family members and told them that he had shot his wife, according to the statement.

Shortly before midnight, David Gaudreau surrendered to the police. He was taken to the Oxford County Jail and charged with murder, officials said.

Classes at RSU 56, which serves the cities of Canton, Carthage, Dixfield and Peru, were canceled Wednesday due to the incident.

“Hello from RSU 56. There will be no school in RSU 56 today, 05/29/24, due to the closure of Route 108 due to the incident that occurred last night in Peru,” the school district posted on its website Wednesday morning. “This closure will not change on the last day of school, more information will be released later today. Thank you and have a nice day.”

Part of Route 108 was closed Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. The road reopened around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.
