Shootings in Indianapolis near 29th and Central, Meridian and 27th

INDIANAPOLIS — Indy police are investigating after two people were shot less than 10 minutes apart on the city's north side. IMPD said several streets were closed as a result.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department crews were called shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday to the intersection of 29th Street and Central Avenue for a person shot. When police arrived, they found a victim in critical condition with a gunshot wound.

IMPD crews then received a call around 5:05 p.m. at the intersection of 27th Street and N. Meridian Street, also on the North Side, reporting that another person had been shot. There, police found a victim with a gunshot wound. That person is in stable condition, police said.

“Preliminarily, detectives believe the incident involved an exchange of gunfire between the two individuals who were shot,” said IMPD Lt. Shane Foley. “It is not clear whether they were in or out of the vehicles they were driving at the time of the shooting. Detectives do not believe anyone else was involved in the incident and are not looking for anyone. Detectives also believe no third parties were injured as a result of the incident.

Lt. Foley added that no other vehicles were hit by gunfire, but there was a possible third car that was hit by one of the two people involved in the gunfire.

As a result, traffic on Central was closed between 28th and 29th Streets and Meridian was closed from Fall Creek to 28th Street.

“Detectives are working to determine what led to the incident,” Foley said. “This remains an active investigation.”
