Shootings in Chicago this weekend: At least 39 shots fired, including 9 fatal, during gun violence on Memorial Day weekend across the city, police say

CHICAGO (WLS) — It's been a violent holiday weekend in Chicago so far.

At least 39 people have been shot, nine of them fatally, since Friday evening. One of these shootings cost the life of a 5-year-old girl.

Mother of 5-year-old shot to death on Near West Side pleads for justice

The mother of 5-year-old Reign Ware says she takes things one day at a time.

When she spoke with ABC7 by phone Monday, she described her daughter as vibrant and loved.

Reign's family shared a photo of the little girl who was tragically shot and killed Sunday on the Near West Side.

Reign's mother, Raven Adams, is still processing what happened. She told ABC7 she was trying to stay strong while grieving the loss of her daughter.

Raven said Reign will be remembered as a fun little girl, fascinated by bubbles, who loved playing with her older sister and watching dance videos on social media.

Reign was sitting in a parked car and her father was standing outside when they were both hit by gunfire early Sunday morning. Chicago police said the shooting happened in South Campbell, near Jackson, just after 3:30 a.m.

Reign later died after being taken to hospital. His 24-year-old father, according to ABC7, was in good condition.

A witness told ABC7 that a group of men got out of a car and shot at a group of people standing outside in what appeared to be an ambush.

Police said they are still investigating a motive for the shooting. For the moment, no one is in detention.

Other shootings from Chicago's holiday weekend

Minutes before the 5-year-old was killed, a man was shot while standing on a sidewalk on the city's West Side, police said.

The deadly shooting happened around 2:58 a.m. in the 1300 block of South Christiana Avenue in North Lawndale.

A group of people were on the sidewalk when shots were fired. It is unclear whether the shooter was part of the group.

A 28-year-old man died after being shot in the back, Chicago police said.

Two women, aged 18 and 28, were shot in the legs. They were taken to hospital and were expected to recover.

A 25-year-old man was also shot in the leg. Police said he went to the hospital himself and was in good condition.

It's unclear what led to the shooting.

On Sunday evening, three people were seriously injured by gunshots in the southern district of the city.

The shooting happened around 7:43 p.m. in the 0-100 block of East 113th Street in Roseland, Chicago police said.

The three victims, a 49-year-old man, a 42-year-old man and another man of unknown age, were at the scene when they were shot by two attackers after a vehicle arrived, police said. . The victims were taken to hospital, all initially in critical condition.

No further information was immediately available.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office has identified two men who were shot and killed in Northwest Chicago Friday evening.

Chicago police said the shooting happened in the Albany Park neighborhood just before 11:30 p.m.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired in an alley near Leland and Troy.

Investigators said they found two men who had been shot in the head. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

The medical examiner's office identified the men as Victor H. Rodriguez, 20, and Jaime I. Serrano, 21. Both resided in Chicago.

A witness told police he saw a black sedan speeding away from the area.

About an hour earlier, three men were shot on the South Side, police said.

Police said the shooting happened at 300 West 59th Place in the Englewood neighborhood just after 10:30 p.m.

A group of people were hanging out in a vacant lot when someone fired shots, police said.

A 29-year-old man, shot in the lower leg, was transported to Providence Hospital in good condition.

Another 29-year-old man, who suffered a graze wound to his shoulder, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

A 25-year-old man, shot in the arm, was transported to the same hospital in good condition.

On Monday, a man was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the 1400 block of Sacramento Avenue in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood.

CPD arrived on scene around 6:02 a.m. The man was transported to the hospital where he later died.

About two hours later, a 43-year-old man was shot in the 8000 block of Stewart Avenue in the West Chatham neighborhood.

The shooting happened around 8:47 a.m., according to police. The man was taken to hospital where he later died.

No one is in custody in any of the listed incidents. CPD area detectives are investigating.

Later Monday, another man was shot to death on Chicago's Northwest Side, police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the 3100 block of West Carmen Avenue in the Albany Park neighborhood around 5 p.m.

A 23-year-old man was near the street when a vehicle stopped and someone inside fired shots, police said.

The victim, shot in the abdomen, was transported to St. Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There is no one in custody and local detectives are investigating. Police did not immediately provide further information about the shooting.

Johnson's summer safety plan put to the test

Despite the still high number of shootings, calls to end gun violence in the city appear to be having an impact.

Violence figures so far this holiday weekend are lower than last year, when 53 people were shot, 11 of them fatally.

The long weekend is putting Mayor Brandon Johnson's summer safety plan to the test.

He spoke at a community march this weekend, criticizing previous administrations for what he calls a lack of investment in the city and its youth.

“They destroyed this city, but now you have progressive leadership that invested in the people to build it,” Johnson said.

Last weekend, at least 45 people were shot, one fatally, during gun violence in Chicago, police said.
