Shooting victim was on his way to shelter when he was shot

LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Taylor Malcolm wanted to end an apparently abusive relationship with Anthony Reed Jr. so badly that she called the YWCA seven times in four days to request an evaluation, placement and shelter to escape an active situation, according to a sworn statement into a court document.

Reed shot Malcolm around 3:15 a.m. Friday as she left the apartment complex, police said. She survived but remains hospitalized after having a bullet removed from her heart, according to police and a probable cause affidavit from the prosecutor.

“She called for help and got help, and she was heading to a shelter,” said a source who asked not to be identified and who is aware of Malcolm's shooting but does not is not authorized to speak to the media.

No one at the YWCA would discuss Malcolm's situation or where she might have gone when she was shot, citing the organization's client privacy policies.

Malcolm called the YWCA helpline twice within 30 minutes after she was shot and seriously injured in her car as she left the Emerald Pine Court apartment complex.

She was trying to get away from Reed and leave the apartment complex, police said Friday. But she didn't call police for help, said Lafayette police Sgt. Shawn Verma said Tuesday. He added that police did not yet know precisely where Malcolm was going.
