Shooting near University of Cincinnati campus: 5 shot, 2 killed

Two people are dead after a shooting near the University of Cincinnati early Monday, Cincinnati police said.

According to Cincinnati Police Capt. Mark Burns, five people were shot in the area of ​​Highland and East University avenues.

The shooting took place at 2:50 a.m. Officers were patrolling the area when they heard several gunshots nearby, Burns said.

A UC Alert notification was sent to the community at 2:55 a.m.

“UC Emergency – Police are responding to a reported emergency at Highland/E University. If you are safe to do so, remain in your location. Be vigilant/take appropriate action. More information coming soon,” the message reads.

At 3:12 a.m., the emergency escalated into a shooting.

When police arrived on scene, they located four male victims, one of whom was pronounced dead, Burns said.

Burns said the other three were transported to a nearby hospital where a second victim was confirmed dead.

A fifth male victim later showed up at a hospital “across town,” he added.

In a media interview, Burns said a third victim may also be dead, but this has not yet been confirmed.

At the scene, the captain said officers saw a person enter a home with a gun. This person finally left the house voluntarily and was taken into custody.

“They don't know if he was the shooter or if he was hiding a weapon – we have no idea,” Burns told media.

At 3:52 a.m., a third UC alert was sent.

“UC Emergency: ALL CLEAR officers responded to Highland/E University for a shooting. The suspect is in custody and police will maintain a heavy presence. Normal operations can resume. It said.

The Cincinnati Police Department's homicide unit is investigating the shooting.
