Shooting near the University of Cincinnati campus: 2 dead and others injured

Two people died and three others were shot and injured in a shooting early Monday morning near the University of Cincinnati, police said.

Cincinnati Police Department Capt. Mark Burns said five men were shot in the area of ​​Highland and East University avenues, less than a mile from campus.

The gunfire erupted around 2:50 a.m., Burns told the Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network.

Burns told the Enquirer that officers patrolling the area heard several gunshots, responded to the scene and found four victims with gunshot wounds, one fatally.

The motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

Victim pronounced dead at hospital

Paramedics transported the other three victims to hospital, where doctors pronounced one of them dead.

At one point, a fifth person showed up at the same hospital with at least one gunshot wound.

The condition of that person and the two other injured victims was not known. Burns said a third victim may also be dead, but that could not immediately be confirmed.

A person in police custody

At the scene, a police officer saw someone running into a house with a gun. This person finally left the home voluntarily and was taken into police custody.

“They don’t know if he was the shooter or if he was hiding a gun — we have no idea,” Burns said.

“Stay in your spot”

At 2:54 a.m. ET, the University of Cincinnati Department of Public Safety issued an alert on X regarding the shooting investigation.

“Police are responding to a reported emergency at Highland/E University. If you are not at risk, stay where you are. Be vigilant/take action if necessary. More information soon,” police wrote.

At 3:52 p.m., UC police issued an all-clear notice on X, stating that a suspect in the shooting was in custody and police remained on scene.

Police have not yet released the identities or ages of the victims.
