Shooting in Chicago: vigil for Reign Ware, a 5-year-old girl, killed on the Near West Side on Campbell Avenue

CHICAGO (WLS) — The shooting death of 5-year-old Reign Ware on Friday led community members to help him overcome lingering trauma that continues to fester for his parents who witnessed his murder.

Ware was shot and killed early Sunday morning while riding in the back of a car at a large rally on the Near West Side.

“Killing children is not okay,” said Pastor Cy Fields.

Amid the music, prayer and calls to end gun violence, the cries of a mother and father could be heard mourning the loss of their daughter who was murdered before their eyes.

I will miss you so much

“Who did this to my baby? Who did this to my baby?” said mother Raven Adams. “I didn't know my baby was so loved, and I appreciate everyone so much.”

The rally of support took place near the intersection of Jackson Boulevard and Campbell Avenue, at the scene of the shooting.

One man chanted, “Reign Ware, we care!” »

Members of one organization, Live Free, traveled the community, offering their services to residents, lending a hand through their own trauma.

“I lost my son to gun violence, so that's the reason I'm doing this because I know what it feels like,” said Mazell Sykes, site coordinator for Live Free.

They hoped to help heal the family's pain that grows every day Reign is not by their side.

“I'm going to miss you so much…so, so much,” Adams said.

A 24-year-old man was also shot and killed in Sunday's shooting. A witness told ABC7 he saw at least four people get out of a car before firing their weapons.

So far no one has been arrested. Chicago police are continuing their investigation.
