Shooting at Arkansas grocery store leaves two dead, eight injured; the shooter was also injured

(CNN) — Ten people were shot, two fatally, following an active shooter incident at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas, according to state police.

A law enforcement officer was among those affected and his injuries are not life-threatening. The shooter was also shot and seriously injured by responding police officers.

“At approximately 11:30 a.m. today, Arkansas State Police responded to a shooting at the Mad Butcher Grocery Store in Fordyce,” an Arkansas State Police news release states. “In total, nine civilians were shot, two of them fatally. A law enforcement officer was also shot and his injuries were not life-threatening.

The suspected shooter was seriously injured, according to the press release, and is in police custody.

A witness, David Rodriguez, told CNN he was walking to a gas station when he heard “pops,” which he thought were fireworks. Shortly after the suspect began firing bullets more rapidly, Rodriguez saw people fleeing the scene. He then heard sirens and saw ambulances and police arriving at the scene.

Rodriguez claims the windows of the Mad Butcher grocery store were smashed as if they had been “opened” by gunfire.

Fordyce, a small town in southeastern Dallas County, had just 3,396 residents in 2020.
