Shipment of weapons and ammunition found on North Island carries 4-year sentence

Stephanie Joan McMillan, 33, pleaded guilty to gun and drug crimes near Port Hardy, Surrey

A Surrey provincial court judge sentenced Stephanie Joan McMillan to four years in prison after pleading guilty to gun and drug crimes that occurred in Surrey and northern Vancouver Island.

McMillan, 33, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking related to a traffic stop on May 2, 2020 when Delta police found a bag containing 121.36 grams (approximately 4.5 ounces) of crystal meth at his feet, 60 pills. of LSD in his wallet and $4,600 Canadian in a Calvin Klein bag.

A month earlier, McMillan was arrested on Highway 19, north of Port McNeill, also during a traffic stop. In this case, police found several firearms, gun parts and ammunition in the trunk. McMillan pleaded guilty to possessing four rifles and a prohibited weapon – a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun – with ammunition. She had been released on a promise to appear in court and charges in the Vancouver Island case had not been approved at the time she was arrested in Surrey.

She was the driver in both cases.

The Crown asked for an overall sentence of 6.5 years in prison while his defense lawyer argued for a suspended prison sentence of two years less a day and three years of probation.

Judge Mark Jetté noted in his May 29 sentencing reasons that McMillan received a lifetime ban in 2016 from possessing a firearm. The court heard she lives on a half-acre hobby farm in Surrey and is expecting her first baby.

Jetté said it was still unclear where she was going with the weapons “and what she was going to do with them.”

“MS. McMillan's criminal record demonstrates a decade of serious criminal offenses that led to the commission of these offenses in April and May 2020 respectively,” the judge noted. “By her own admission, she had become entrenched in a criminal lifestyle during this period and sold drugs to support this lifestyle and his drug addiction.”
