Sheriffs Use Pit Swing to Apprehend Drunk, Reckless Driver on Old Highway 40

Witnesses said the driver was stumbling around a store and nearly hit a pedestrian as he exited the parking lot. The truck was seen driving erratically, crossing into oncoming lanes of traffic.

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — A drunk driver was arrested after leading deputies on a vehicle chase in Summit County with reports of driving into oncoming traffic and reckless driving. The pursuit ended with a successful pit maneuver on Old Highway 40.

On May 24, Summit County dispatch received a report of an intoxicated driver in a gray Dodge heavy-duty truck leaving a parking lot. Witnesses said the driver was stumbling around a store and nearly hit a pedestrian as he exited the parking lot. The truck was seen driving erratically, entering into oncoming lanes of traffic.

Police located the suspect vehicle traveling southbound on Old Highway 40 and attempted to stop it. The driver refused to comply, triggering a pursuit on Old Highway 40. Officers successfully performed a pit maneuver before the vehicle reached SR248, ending the pursuit.

The driver was apprehended and charged with several charges, including a second DUI, failure to stop, driving under alcohol restrictions, open container, reckless driving and no insurance.
