Sheriff's Office Welcomes 10 Deputies to the Hancock CORE Custody Deputy Program | Local News

Sheriff Bill Brown welcomed 10 new custody deputies to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office last week, ahead of their graduation from the Allan Hancock CORE Deputy Duty Academy.

On May 23, Custody Chief Vincent Wasilewski delivered the keynote address to the CORE Custody Academy class that included Custody Deputies Brian Bautista, Jesus Cabrera Jr., Raymundo Estrada, Luis Lopez-Zarate, Joaquin Quintero, Erik Sheets, Dylan Stockton, Nathan Valdovinos, Alex Vasquez and Matthew Woods.

During his commencement speech, Wasilewski told graduates that the most important thing to maintain in the years to come is empathy.

“With empathy, we can touch the lives of everyone we encounter and provide our services with the humanity and compassion that other members of the community deserve,” Wasilewski told the graduates.

The class of 10 recruits received 260 hours of instruction. Some of the instructions included emergency planning in a detention facility, report writing, ethics, investigative procedures, inmate classification, contraband detection, arrest and control, training physical and direct supervision training.

Deputy Warden Brian Bautista received the title of Class Valedictorian, Deputy Warden Raymundo Estrada received the Santa Maria Elks Lodge Leadership Award, and Deputy Warden Joaquin Quintero received the Ron Award Deputy Sheriffs Association Battles.
