Sheriff's Office: Charlotte man drowns while fishing on Jordan Lake

The Chatham County Sheriff's Office, along with the state medical examiner, is investigating a drowning that occurred at the Jordan Lake Wildlife Area Saturday night.

A release from the sheriff's office Sunday morning said Pradip Kumar Bhujel, 25, of Charlotte, was found after a search around Jordan Lake near 6771 NC 751. First responders arrived around 11:43 p.m. a call of a possible drowning.

Upon arrival, rescue teams learned that Bhujel was on a fishing trip with friends, and he was last seen wading in the water before disappearing from sight.

The Chatham County Sheriff's Office said search efforts for Bhujel focused on the area where he was last seen, and that's ultimately where his body was found. Sunday's release said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Pradip Kumar Bhujel,” Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson said. “Our team is thoroughly investigating the incident to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic event.”

The sheriff's office said along with its deputies, first responders from Chatham County Emergency Management, North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, FirstHealth EMS and the state medical examiner's office assisted looking at night.

Bhujel's death marks the second fatal drowning around Jordan Lake this summer, as a 16-year-old from Winston-Salem drowned over Memorial Day weekend while swimming in a creek. All visitors to Jordan Lake are recommended to wear a life jacket, swim only in designated areas, closely supervise children, and be aware of water conditions.

No further information was publicly available about Bhujel's death as of Sunday morning, according to investigators.
