Sheriff's eviction near Castro neighborhood leads to gunfire, SWAT situation

A tense police standoff was taking place Wednesday afternoon in Corona Heights, near Buena Vista Park, where an eviction was reportedly taking place by the SF Sheriff's Department and the tenant allegedly fired a gun.

The standoff is taking place at 30 Roosevelt Way, where the eviction took place. A photo taken by Mission Local at 14th and 15th Streets shows a row of police vehicles parked along 14th, and a SWAT situation is unfolding with the evictee still barricaded inside the building.

Captain Alejandro Cabebe confirmed that the eviction took place at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday when “the person being evicted fired several bullets of unknown caliber through the door.”

According to Mission Local, which spoke to a law enforcement source, two to three sheriff's deputies were trapped inside the multi-unit apartment building after the gunfire, and it was unclear whether they were now outside.

McKinley Elementary School is next door, and apparently some of the children were inside a daycare, but were free to leave if their parents wanted.

A video posted to the Citizen app shows a police officer directing traffic on 14th Street to turn onto Castro.

The SFPD and the sheriff's department have issued an “avoid area” advisory to residents.

The impasse appears to be continuing as I write this at 2:25 p.m.
