Sheriff: Two Wisconsin kayakers cling to a tree after overturning near a dam, rescued

(WFRV) – Authorities in northwest Wisconsin helped rescue two kayakers who were clinging to a tree after their kayak overturned.

According to the Barron County Sheriff's Office, on June 9 around 12:30 p.m., a 911 call came in from two kayakers who overturned in the current near Mikana Dam and had to be rescued. Several agencies responded to the scene.


When authorities arrived on scene, the two kayakers were found clinging to a tree in a strong current coming from the Mikana dam. Rescue ropes were reportedly used to bring the two kayakers to shore.

Authorities say both men were treated and released at the scene. A boat was reportedly used to find the missing kayaks downstream.

Both kayakers were wearing life jackets, which allowed them to stay afloat and cling to a tree, according to the release. The Barron County Sheriff's Office wanted to remind people that they must wear a life jacket on any vessel navigating a waterway.
