Sheriff Richard Roundtree and Eugene Brantley speak out in runoff voting

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – In less than 24 hours, voters will head to the polls for the Richmond County Sheriff's Democratic primary runoff. Eugene Brantley faces current Sheriff Richard Roundtree.

Sheriff Richard Roundtree and Eugene Brantley both loudly announced their plans ahead of Tuesday's runoff election.

Monday morning, Brantley announced his plans for a safer community and better citizen access to the sheriff.

“It is very important that we reintegrate our officers into the community so that we can build trust and relationships in order to prevent crimes. And when they happen, we're able to solve these crimes because we've built relationships with these people…” said Eugene “Gino Rock” Brantley.

Gino also announced his 10 goals for his first 100 days in office, which include immediate action against gun violence and reinstitution of the traffic division. He said his strategies aim to address the immediate needs of the community and restore safety and trust in law enforcement.

“We want to get back to community-oriented law enforcement because it's very important that we're out there, that we can communicate with the kids, and that we can know and understand what's going on in each neighborhood.”

We had the chance to speak with Sheriff Richard Roundtree who talked about some current goals he and his administration have achieved, like removing fentanyl from the streets that could have cost three million lives and the camera project downtown.

“Over the next four years, we want people to understand what we've done. We are excited about the next four years with the Sheriff's Office and the work we have already accomplished and we continue to place their trust in us as they did four years ago…” said Sheriff Richard Roundtree .

Roundtree said efforts to combat gun violence are a joint effort.

“I have been up front and honest in saying we are here to be on the front lines with you, but this has to be a community fight. For civic groups, faith groups, civic organizations, communities, neighborhoods and, most importantly, families.

Polling stations are open tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. You are invited to vote in your assigned voting precinct.
