Sheriff must be punished more severely | Letters to the editor – Sun Sentinel

I am deeply disappointed by Judge Robert Kilbride's recommendations regarding the conduct of Sheriff Gregory Tony, Broward County's top law enforcement officer.

I hope the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission will look at the entire case, not just one misstep, and act accordingly.

Tony insists MPs adhere to the highest standards of conduct and performance. Lying is not allowed and truthfulness is required. I believe these are appropriate requirements and that he, of all people, should be held to this standard – and more.

Will an ethics course and 18 month probationary period work? No, they will have no impact. Tony repeatedly lied and left out information. What will make the difference? Suspend his law enforcement certificate for six months.

The inability to preen in front of the public or use BSO equipment and toys in uniform will have an impact. He can still perform his duties, but cannot carry a weapon or lead a BSO unit. Maybe this punishment will sink in and he'll realize he's not above the law.

Tony is a disgrace to the law enforcement community. The state should suspend his illegally obtained law enforcement certificate.

What poor models

The political world is full of so-called civil servants who demand good behavior from citizens, but who do not practice this behavior themselves.

Donald Trump demands strict loyalty but destroys our courts, the FBI and the military. Supreme Court Justice Alioto sees no reason to respect judicial ethics.

Senators and Representatives obviously approve of the attack on the police officers who were protecting the US Capitol on January 6. Gov. Ron DeSantis says he supports the people, then tries to stop them from voting on amendments as he creates an education dictatorship.

Our Broward sheriff condemns lying – but he did it himself.

What terrible examples for young people.

And U.S ? We say we want public servants with honesty and integrity, and yet we either don't vote or we continue to elect the same type of people.

Our remedy is the ballot box. Let's use it!

Take me back, please

Take me back to a time when my savings account was safe from hackers, when news was fact, not opinion.

Take me back to the days when I could teach my children without being sued, when I could communicate with pen and paper, and when the Constitution was taught in school.

Take me back to the days when lying was punished and laughter was at my table instead of political debates.

Bring me back, so that when I wake up in the morning, I want to move forward instead of backward.

Cats are pretenders

I loved Dave Hyde's Sun Sentinel column about how “Zito made the Panthers the best show in town.” Bill Zito is without a doubt the best rookie in franchise history. I hope he stays.

He not only built this team, but he also instilled in them the knowledge needed to compete in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Two years ago, the Panthers put on the best show in the NHL. They won the prestigious President's Trophy for the most points in the standings, scoring goals everywhere. Then came the playoffs.

Unlike most other sports, hockey's regular season is very different from the playoffs. Teams that are flashy and successful in seasonal play are often neutralized by hard-nosed defensive tactics in the playoffs.

That's what happened to the 2022 Panthers. The eighth-seeded Washington Caps took them to the brink with teeth-grinding defense, then the back-to-back champion Tampa Bay Lightning knocked them out of it. the ice in four games as if the Bolts were playing children.

Then, Zito made the second-largest hire by the Panthers organization. He brought in Paul Maurice, who created a system designed to win the Cup. They went from 8th place to the finals last year and are now fighting for the Eastern Conference championship.

Come on cats!
