MALTA — A Watervilet man has been charged with manslaughter, accused of hitting another man with a wrench during a fight Friday night in the Malta town, causing the man's death, according to the Saratoga County Sheriff's Office.

Cyrus J. Tetreault, 20, was charged with first-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, for allegedly hitting the man with what authorities described as a “large wrench » during an altercation on Sparrow Drive, officials said.

Sheriff's deputies responded around 6:22 p.m. to a call of a fight in progress. The victim, who has not been identified, suffered a “traumatic injury” during the altercation, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It is truly tragic that this situation resulted in a loss of life,” Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo said in a statement. “I am grateful for the professional response of the men and women of my agency and for the quick identification and arrest of the person responsible.”

Zurlo also thanked members of the public who provided information contributing to the investigation.

Tétreault was arraigned in the Malta Municipal Court and was remanded in custody pending further proceedings.
