Sheriff: Cole County Jail inmate dies Saturday

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

An inmate died Saturday at the Cole County Jail, according to Cole County Sheriff John Wheeler.

A news release states that around 3:41 p.m., Cole County deputies found an inmate unresponsive in their cell. The identity of the inmate has not been shared.

The release said staff took life-saving measures and called 911. Emergency responders arrived at the prison at 3:52 p.m. and made several attempts to resuscitate the inmate.

The inmate was pronounced dead at 4:28 p.m. Saturday.

The release says the Callaway County Sheriff's Department also responded and was on scene within 30 minutes. Their department agreed to conduct an independent investigation into the death.

An email received by ABC 17 News from the Callaway County Sheriff's Office says Cole County detention staff found an unconscious elderly man who was housed alone in a medical cell.

The department's email also states that the initial investigation indicates no signs of foul play. An autopsy will be performed within the week, according to the email.

They were unable to provide the inmate's name.
