Shelly Fire rages near Pacific Crest Trail in Klamath National Forest

Firefighters are battling a wildfire raging in the Klamath National Forest in Siskiyou County, west of Etna and Highway 3, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The Shelly Fire started near Shelly Lake in the Marble Mountains Wilderness, according to Kimberly DeVall, public affairs officer for the Klamath National Forest.

According to DeVall, the fire closed the Pacific Crest Trail between Etna Summit and Shackleford Trail.

The Shelly Fire spread Wednesday afternoon, reaching 224.1 acres as of 5 p.m., according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

The fire started near Shelly Lake at 1:35 p.m. on July 3, Cal Fire said. The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Cal Fire.

A wildfire that started Wednesday in the Klamath National Forest in Siskiyou County has burned at least 50 acres and closed part of the Pacific Crest Trail, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The Shelly Fire started near Shelly Lake in the Marble Wilderness, according to Kimberly DeVall, public affairs officer for the Klamath National Forest.

The Pacific Crest Trail is closed between Etna Summit and Shackleford Trail, according to DeVall.

No structures are threatened and no active evacuations have taken place as of 4:30 p.m., according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office.

Smoke was visible west of Highway 3, including from the towns of Etna and Fort Jones.

Firefighters are battling the blaze in rugged terrain using air attacks, including air tankers, helicopters and paratroopers.

“Fire officials believe the Shelly Fire will be a long-lasting fire,” Acting Forest Supervisor Chris Christofferson said in a statement released Wednesday by the Forest Service.
