Shasta County Sheriff: No major incidents over Memorial Day weekend | News

SHASTA COUNTY, CA. – The Shasta County Sheriff's Office reported that Memorial Day weekend passed without any major incidents on Shasta County waterways.

More than 130 barges with students from the University of Oregon and UC Davis gathered on Slaughterhouse Island over the holiday weekend. A “safe boat” staffed by CommonSpirit/Dignity Health staff provided medical assistance to students on the island.

Medical staff reported treating a total of 35 students, mostly for minor injuries, and helped transport four students to local hospitals for treatment of more serious issues (injury, drug overdose and alcohol-related issues). ).

Over the weekend on Shasta Lake, one person was arrested for boating under the influence, there were four non-injury boating accidents and seven citations were written.

BSU deputies conducted three water rescues on the Sacramento River over the holiday weekend. In the first incident, around 12:47 p.m. Saturday, three people were spotted stranded on an island west of the Sundial Bridge after being separated from their kayaks and paddle boats. The deputies responded and were able to reunite them with their ships.

Around 10 a.m. Monday, deputies from the Boating Safety Unit responded to the Sacramento River in the JGW Mobile Home Park area for reports of two kayakers in need of assistance. after falling into the water. Officers located one adult kayaker near shore, clinging to foliage, and another adult kayaker clinging to a kayak. Both were rescued safely without incident. The two were part of a group of 6 kayakers enjoying the river. All members of the group were located and transported to the Bonnyview boat ramp by officers.

A third water rescue was conducted Monday afternoon around 1:43 p.m. A woman climbed an embankment into the backyard of a home in the 2000 block of Felstet Lane in Redding and told the owner that she had lost her sister on the river after her kayak capsized. . Redding Police officers and park rangers responded and were able to locate the adult female who was clinging to a rock in the river. She was safely rescued and transported to dry land.

BSU deputies also assisted the occupants of a boat that ran aground on rocks west of the Sundial Bridge in Redding around 3:32 p.m. Monday.

In this incident, all parties were located and transported to a nearby boat ramp.
