Shadow Of The Erdtree nerfs “the most powerful weapon in the game”

One day Shadow Of The Erdtree is too hard, the next day it's too easy (Twitter)

Fans are going through Elden Ring Shadow Of The Erdtree with a very powerful shield, but FromSoftware has already made it less powerful.

Two years after Elden Ring's release in 2022, FromSoftware has finally launched its Shadow Of The Erdtree expansion. It was critically acclaimed, but with a huge map and new weapon types came an even higher level of difficulty.

This was so difficult for fans that the expansion was criticized on Steam, forcing FromSoftware to make the game slightly easier by changing the blessing enchantments.

Fans have now discovered that attack shields are incredibly effective, with one fan claiming that they are “the most powerful weapon in the entire game.” But another new patch has already made them less powerful.

“The new thrust shields are the most powerful weapons in the entire game and they don't even come close. DLC NG+ [New Game+ and downloadable content] “was completely wiped out,” DamnHare said on the Elden Ring subreddit.

The reason why attack shields are so powerful is because they give fans the ability to defend and attack at the same time, with the Shield Smash skill.

Fans take very little damage when using the shield, while still being able to use it to attack without putting themselves in a vulnerable position, but there's more.

“Attack shields can be enchanted with any affinity/damage type, making them extremely versatile. And it’s so much fun to gracefully strike each boss!” added DamnHare.

You can see how powerful the push shield is below, but beware of boss spoilers.

Many others agree and claim that they too have used the Attack Shield to defeat the game's relentless bosses.

“Yeah, that's how I beat the final boss. Being able to counter to break the balance without worrying about timing and only taking minor damage is insane. […] “They are completely broken,” DrStrangelove899 said.

FromSoftware also believes that the push shields are too powerful, as the developer has now made them less powerful in its latest patch.

The patch covers bug fixes and balance adjustments, and one of the changes is:

“Fixed a bug where successfully shielding while attacking with the Attack Shield weapon type would consume less stamina than intended.”

In one week, FromSoftware has shown just how difficult it is to find the right balance in a game, responding to fan complaints that Shadow Of The Erdtree was too difficult and then fixing a bug that made it too easy.

But there are also fans playing saxophones and on dance mats, so in the end, all you really need is practice.
