Sedalia man charged after allegedly stabbing man

SEDALIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Sedalia man was charged Monday after allegedly stabbing another man earlier in the day.

Shane Ruth was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. A failure to appear warrant was issued Monday and an arraignment was scheduled for Tuesday. Bail of $150,000 was set.

According to probable cause, a man told law enforcement that Ruth stabbed him in the left arm. He reportedly said he began to fight back until he saw Ruth bent over, according to the release. The man then saw blood flowing from the wound. The victim allegedly knew Shane but was not friends with him, the release states.

The victim told law enforcement he did not know why Ruth stabbed him, the release said. Police saw a 3- to 4-inch cut on his left arm, near his shoulder, that “appeared deep,” the probable cause states. The victim also reportedly had a cut on the left side of his face.

Ruth was arrested and reportedly denied assaulting anyone with a knife, the release said. Ruth eventually claimed that he and the victim were fighting and that a knife was on the ground. He picked it up and threw it along the Katy Trail between South Ohio Avenue and East 14.th Street, the statement said.

A witness who was with the victim reportedly told police that the victim had picked her up from work and they were driving when their car died, the release states. The two men then walked to a business, the release states. She then saw the two fighting but “did not really see the whole picture,” the statement said.

The release said Ruth was arrested on a probation warrant and held in custody for 24 hours. Probation violations were filed multiple times in another case. Ruth pleaded guilty on March 28, 2023, to drug possession and resisting arrest. He was sentenced to five years of suspended probation, with three years suspended.
