Co-accused Joshua Horton, 18, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with the murder of Maaka Hakiwai, 17, during the altercation.

Maaka died in hospital, while his brother Nate, 18, was also seriously injured. Since then, his condition has improved.

An argument between the two groups of teenagers was allegedly sparked over a hat one of the Hakiwai brothers was wearing, the Herald Sun reported.

The 17-year-old was taken into custody after three protective services officers spotted him at Watergardens station, recognizing him from a crime circular issued by Victoria Police last week.

Horton was held in custody until his incarceration on February 12.
