Second suspect arrested in Sarasota hookah lounge shooting

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – There has been another arrest in connection with the shooting in Sarasota that left Auburn running back Brian Battie fighting for his life.

Brian remains in critical condition and if he survives, he faces permanent paralysis.

The shooting occurred near the Hookah Lounge Marrakech at 3:30 a.m. on May 18. Six people were shot, including the suspect.

The shooting also claimed the life of Brian Battie's brother, Tommie Battie IV.

Suspect Darryl Brookins remains behind bars and is charged with murder, attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to court records, Brookins' girlfriend, Nicole Roberts, was arrested last Friday and was also charged in the case. She is charged with complicity in second-degree murder.

According to the arrest affidavit, she left the scene of the shooting in a rental car. Surveillance video from the area shows a woman matching Roberts' stature and body type get out of the car and throw something that could be a gun into the Manatee River.

The affidavit states that during a search of the river, detectives found a Glock 9mm firearm, which is believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.

Roberts has a detention hearing scheduled for June 7. Brookins' next court appearance is July 3.
