Second of two men accused of shooting each other in custody

SALT LAKE CITY — The second of two gunmen accused of shooting each other in April in Salt Lake City has been arrested.

Christian Miramontes, 24, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Wednesday for investigation into discharge of a firearm causing injury, aggravated assault and robbery.

On Tuesday, Luis Alejandro Alfaro Munguia, 24, of Kearns, was charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault resulting in serious injury and two counts of firing a firearm resulting in injury , felonies of the second degree; as well as obstruction of justice and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, third-degree felonies, which are his alleged role in the same incident.

On April 6, Salt Lake Police responded to the area of 1050 W. 300 South after receiving a report of a shooting. Investigators found Miramontes, who had a bullet hole in the front driver's side window and who had also been shot in the left arm and right thigh, according to charging documents.

Police said Miramontes “did not cooperate with the investigation and was transported to the hospital for his injuries.”

Detectives with the city's gang unit executed a search warrant at Miramontes' home and said they recovered five firearms, including a stolen rifle. While officers were still on the scene, and approximately 90 minutes after they were first called, police were informed that Alfaro showed up at a local hospital with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and the forearm, according to the charges. Initially, he claimed to have been caught in the crossfire between two other parties shooting at each other.

However, detectives were later able to recover two shell casings and surveillance video from a school located at 1115 S. 300 West. The video reportedly shows Alfaro and Miramontes arriving in separate cars and exiting.

“A physical struggle occurs. A muzzle flash appears to go off and Alfaro Munguia runs towards (his car), then runs towards (Miramontes' car) and extends his arm as if holding a gun towards the side window driver (of the car) where the bullet hole was later discovered,” according to the charges.
