Second man found with gun during booking at Halifax Co. Detention Center, sheriff says

The Halifax County Sheriff's Office says a second inmate was found in less than a week with a handgun on him at the county detention center.

Alito Roberto Estrada, 27, was booked into the Halifax County Detention Center on Friday after being brought in by an outside agency, according to the sheriff's office.

While detention officers were searching Estrada, they found a .32 caliber handgun on him, as well as approximately 8 grams of crack cocaine.

A week before Estrada was detained, deputies arrested Joshua Lawrence, 35, of Durham, after another agency arrested him and charged him with several charges, including DWI. for driving under the influence.

While he was being searched during his detention, detention officers found a loaded gun on him.

“When arresting people in the field, sometimes things go unnoticed and are not discovered until the booking process,” the sheriff's office said. “However, with this gun incident and last week's gun incident, this should not have happened.
