Seattle city leaders to host community conversation after fatal shooting near Alki Beach

Days after a deadly shooting that left a 22-year-old dead near Alki Beach, Seattle City Council member Rob Saka hosted a community meeting to discuss the pressing issue of public safety.

The council member said the rally was an opportunity to open dialogue between city officials and residents shaken by the recent violence.

Along with Saka, Acting Police Chief Sue Rahr and City Councilor Tanya Woo were among the lineup of leaders attending the event at Alki United Church of Christ.

“The gun violence playing out on our streets is unacceptable. It’s time we come together as a city and put a stop to this. Any lasting solution starts with an honest conversation,” Saka said. “That’s why I’m bringing together our community and a diverse group of civic leaders. We need short and long term strategies to ensure Alki is a safe and welcoming place for all. »

During the weekend shooting, a 27-year-old man was also shot and taken to the hospital, and nearby homes were also hit by gunfire.

Other city leaders expected to speak at the community meeting include Natalie Walton-Anderson, director of public safety for the mayor's office; AP Diaz, Seattle Parks and Recreation Superintendent; Francisca Stefan, Senior Deputy Director; and Venu Nemani, safety manager, both with the Seattle Department of Transportation.

Members of the Seattle Police Department will also be on hand to join the conversation and listen to the concerns of their community.
