Search turns to recovery operation to find missing British Columbia boater, presumed dead

MISSION, BRITISH COLUMBIA — Police and other rescue agencies say they are still searching for a missing 37-year-old boater near Mission, B.C., but local rescue teams say “it is unlikely that he is still alive.”

RCMP said police went to Nicomen Slough, about 14 kilometers northeast of Mission, Friday evening after receiving reports of a boating accident in which two men were thrown into the water.

They say the boaters allegedly did donuts in a small aluminum boat, and both were thrown from the boat after hitting their own wake.

Police said the boat's passenger was able to reach shore, but the driver could not be located after what police described as an extensive search of the area.

Search and rescue teams from Mission, Central Fraser Valley and South Fraser are resuming their search efforts today, but say it is “unlikely that the driver is still alive.”

Police said the missing boater, from Dewdney, B.C., was not wearing a life jacket at the time and alcohol may also have played a role in the incident.

RCMP Mission Cpl. Harrison Mohr says police extend their condolences to the families and friends of the missing boater.

“It’s a tragic end to what was supposed to be a fun evening on the water. Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends, as well as the passenger who accompanied him on the boat,” he said in a written statement.

Mohr warns people to wear a life jacket when going on the water during peak boating season.

“It’s like a seat belt in a car: It only works if you wear it,” Mohr said.
