Search dogs and mountain rescue teams have joined the search for a 19-year-old British man who went missing on Tenerife, his mother says.

Apprentice mason Jay Slater, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, was last heard from at around 8am BST on Monday.

His friend Lucy – with whom he had gone to the island to attend a music festival – said he called her to say he was lost, needed to drink water and that he had 1% battery on his phone.

Mr Slater's phone then went dead, his last known location being the mountainous Rural Teno National Park in the northwest of the island.

Since then, we haven't heard from him.

His worried mother, Debbie Duncan, who flew to Tenerife with her other son, told the BBC that Spanish authorities had deployed mountain rescue units and dogs.

She said: “It's absolutely horrible. Nothing happened, something happened.”

Lucy, who traveled to the island with Mr Slater to attend the NRG music festival, said he had gone to stay with people he had met on holiday.

However, she said Mr Slater apparently did not realize how far they were from where he lived and left on Monday morning to walk home.

She told the BBC she spent hours looking for him on Monday and Tuesday.

“The area is so big,” she said.

A Foreign Office spokesperson told the BBC: “We are supporting the family of a British man missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
