June 14 (UPI) — The search continued Friday on the Greek island of Amorgos for Albert Calibet, a retired Los Angeles sheriff's deputy. He disappeared while hiking in hot weather.

A State Department spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News that they were aware of Calibet's disappearance and would “work closely with local authorities in their search efforts.”

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said, “We are actively working with several overseas agencies to provide assistance in the search for Deputy Calibet and will use every resource available to us to bring him back to those who love him.”

He added that his thoughts and prayers are with Calibet's family.

Calibet, an experienced hiker who has been visiting Amorgos for years, went missing Tuesday after failing to return from a hike.

Greek authorities are searching for him, including several agencies and volunteers from the Greek coast guard as well as teams from the neighboring islands of Paros and Naxos.

A drone is used in the research.

British TV presenter Michael Mosley disappeared days before Calibet. Mosley's body was found four days later on the Greek island of Symi.

Calibet's girlfriend, Debbie Leshane, arrived in Greece on Friday.

“He called me right before he went hiking. … It was 7:07 a.m. [a.m.] in Greece, then we talked for six minutes, then he sent me a photo at 9:20 [a.m.] at the start of the trail with the sign. And we haven't spoken since,” LaShane said.

Calibet's brother Oliver said the family remains very positive, but on the fourth day, time is running out in the search.

Calibet's sister-in-law, Sandrine Cutright, said: “He is in good physical shape. He swims every day, he runs.”
