Search continues for former Los Angeles deputy missing in Greece

The search continues for a former California sheriff's deputy who disappeared Tuesday while on vacation in Greece, while a second American tourist is believed to have gone missing.

Albert Calibet, who retired from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in 2018, disappeared while preparing to travel to the Greek island of Amorgos, a destination his family said he visited on several occasions since 2009. A missing person's report was filed after Calibet failed to do so. meet a friend.

“He knows this path, he knows this island,” Robin Leon, a family friend, told NBC News NOW. “The mayor knows him, all the cafes know him, people know Albert on this island. They love him.”

The municipality of Amorgos said in a Facebook post that Calibet, 59, followed the road from the Asphontylite region to the village of Katapola. He was wearing Bermuda shorts and a dark shirt when he disappeared, authorities said.

Sandrine Cutwright, Calibet's sister-in-law, told NBC News NOW that “every minute, every hour that goes by, it gets sadder.”

Another American tourist in Greece was reported missing days after Calibet's disappearance, according to reports. ABC News reported that the unidentified man was last seen on Tuesday at a tavern in Mathraki, located in the west of the island of Corfu, where he was staying with a friend.

The friend called police after returning home Thursday to find the door to the house open, the lights on and the air conditioning running, according to the outlet. The missing man's identification and travel documents were missing, ABC News reported, citing investigators.

The two disappearances come days after Greek authorities found the body of British television presenter and healthy lifestyle advocate Michael Mosley in a rocky area on the Greek island of Symi.

Mosley, 67, was reported missing last week after failing to return from a walk he took alone during the scorching heat. Investigators said he died of natural causes.
