Scottie Scheffler risks missing US Open after disastrous fifth hole for group

PINEHURST, N.C. – Scottie Scheffler is in danger of missing the U.S. Open cut after a disastrous fifth hole Friday at No. 2 Pinehurst.

Scheffler made a double bogey on the par 5, one of two on the course, to fall to 4 through 14 holes in his second round and 5 down for the championship. The projected cut is currently above 3. Scheffler's competitors, side.

With his second shot, Scheffler headed toward the green and missed the left waste area. His third hit the green but didn't go far enough and rolled into the sand. He holed his fourth shot over the green, teeed up 15 feet from the hole and made two putts.

Schauffele also left two shots in the left waste zone, although he was initially left of the green in three shots after hooking his tee shot into the trees just 184 yards from the tee. The double brought Schauffele to 1 under for the championship.

As for McIlroy, he remained at 4 under, despite sending his third shot from the left waste zone across the green. It went up and down from there.

No. 5 plays like the easiest hole on the course since the start of the championship. McIlroy and Schauffele's doubles were the third and fourth scores worse than the bogeys recorded so far this week at the fifth.
