Savannah police officer involved in shooting on Victory Drive

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Authorities are investigating a shooting involving a Savannah Police Department officer.

Officials say the incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Victory Drive and Wallin Street when officers attempted to conduct a vehicle stop based on information provided by the Chatham County Police Department (CCPD).


During the stop, Gregory Eugene Griffin, 31, tried to run away. He began driving in the wrong lane on E. Victory Drive and struck another vehicle.

Griffin then exited his vehicle and began fleeing on foot. Officers continued to pursue Griffin when he pulled out a firearm and fired at officers. Three officers returned fire, hitting Griffin.

Griffin was transported to Memorial Health with injuries. WSAV was told the officer was OK.

This is the second shooting involving an SPD officer in the past two weeks.
