Satellite technology contributes to Tuesday fire near El Dorado Hills – Folsom Times

El Dorado Hills firefighters were able to quickly contain a vegetation fire in a mostly rural area Tuesday afternoon, thanks to the use of satellite technology.

Shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday, multiple units from the El Dorado Hills Fire Department and Cal Fire's Amador-El Dorado Unit responded to a reported vegetation fire near Ryan Ranch Road in the community of Latrobe. Upon arrival to the area, firefighters observed the fire in a wooded canyon in the area, burning upstream in dry vegetation. Fortunately, no homes were immediately threatened by the progression of the fire.

After dispatching air support in the form of a helicopter from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, fire crews were able to contain the fire to approximately 0.25 acres. The source of the fire remains under investigation Tuesday afternoon and firefighters were expected to remain in the rural area until late in the afternoon to ensure any hot sports or embers were completely extinguished to avoid any possible outbreak.

According to the El Dorado Hills Fire Department, Tuesday's fire was initially detected through the use of satellite technology. The technology has already detected several fires in the state, allowing the creation of a fire spread model and identification of the nearest @alertcalifornia camera. The technology provided provided responding units with valuable pre-arrival data regarding the fire's rural location, progression and potential threat.

“The Fire Integrated Real-Time Intelligence System (FIRIS) aircraft was on alert and ready to provide live aerial observation to assist responders,” El Dorado Hills fire officials said in their incident report. . “These technologies represent a significant advance in protecting Californians from wildfires. »
