Sarim Burney seeks bail in human trafficking case

Social worker Sarim Burney's lawyer said on Monday that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had made “baseless” allegations against his client in a human trafficking case.

Burney was arrested on June 5 after landing at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi following his visit to the United States.

The Judicial Magistrate of Karachi East has taken up the plea of Sarim Burney seeking bail in the human trafficking case. In his arguments to the court, Burney's lawyer alleged that the FIA made baseless allegations against his client without a “proper” investigation.

He said the young child was left at the hospital by the parents themselves and allegations of receiving Rs 3 million are now being raised.

The social activist's lawyer said the adoption of children was done through a designed process and the FIA had failed to prove its allegations.

The court also sought the FIA's response to Sarim Burney's bail application.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered the first information report (FIR) against rights activist Sarim Burney for allegedly smuggling newborn babies to the United States (US).

In the FIR, the investigating agency arrested the rights activist for “trafficking” a newborn baby – identified as Haya – to the US. Haya, who according to the FIA was the last girl trafficked to the US, was allegedly bought from her parents for Rs 1 million.
