Santa Anita concludes winter-spring season with near-perfect safety record

Santa Anita Park | Benedict

Santa Anita Park's winter-spring season, which ran from September to June, ended June 17 with a near-perfect safety rating of 99.97 percent, according to a press release from the track Monday morning . The release said the rating is the highest in the world among track races with a similar schedule. During the six-month period, a total of 6,678 horses competed on the track's dirt and turf courses.

“Santa Anita Park veterinarians have performed nearly 6,400 exams before horses work at Santa Anita since September 1 of last year,” said Dionne Benson, head veterinarian for 1/ST Racing. “The increased oversight has allowed everyone to have additional opportunities to work for the best interest of the horse. We are pleased that since HISA has adopted many of the Santa Anita Park and California protocols over the past year, the Overall safety of the sport has improved across the country.
