San Jose man arrested on suspicion of attempting to rob two banks

SAN JOSE — A suspect has been arrested in connection with two recent attempted bank robberies in San Jose, police said.

The first attempt occurred around 1:10 p.m. on May 12 in the 1100 block of South King Road and the second around 4:50 p.m. on May 14 in the 1700 block of Story Road, San Jose police spokeswoman Stacie Shih said in a news release Friday.

Both times, the suspect handed over a handwritten note demanding money, but bank tellers did not comply, Shih said, adding that the suspect said in one of the notes that he had a gun.

Police released a photo of one of the notes, which asked the teller for $7,000 and “please be quick.”

The suspect left each bank before officers arrived. Shih said detectives later identified him as a 38-year-old San Jose resident and obtained a warrant for his arrest.

On June 19, the man was arrested at his home and booked into Santa Clara County Jail for attempted armed robbery. He is being held without bail at Elmwood Correctional Center in Milpitas, according to jail records.
