San Fernando man arrested for shooting five people, shooting at LAPD helicopter

A San Fernando man has been arrested for allegedly shooting five people and shooting at a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter during a lengthy standoff over the weekend.

Officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Orange Grove Avenue Saturday around 11:20 p.m. after receiving reports of multiple gunshot victims at a home in the area, according to a news release from the San Fernando Police Department.

“When officers arrived on scene, they initially discovered four gunshot victims in a residence,” the release states. “A fifth victim was later located at the hospital and determined that he had driven himself.”

No condition of the victim's health is immediately known.

The suspect, identified as Martin Rodriguez, 61, was found at a home near the scene of the shooting, police said.

He barricaded himself inside his house, provoking a lengthy confrontation with the police, the statement said.

At one point during the standoff, investigators say the suspect allegedly shot at the Los Angeles Police Department helicopter that was helping them investigate.

Along with SFPD officers, officers from the Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena and Los Angeles police departments, as well as deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, assisted in the efforts that ultimately resulted in the arrest by Rodriguez.

He was charged with seven counts of attempted murder, one count of making criminal threats, one count of shooting into an inhabited dwelling and one count of shooting into an airplane, police said.

His bail is set at $9.8 million.

The motive for the incident has not yet been revealed.
