San Bernardino police shoot suspect after he allegedly shot ex-wife on Highway 215

A domestic violence suspect who allegedly opened fire on his wife on the 215 Freeway Sunday is in critical condition after being shot by police, authorities say.

The incident began around 12:30 p.m., when officers were dispatched to a shooting that had just occurred near the Baseline Street ramp on the north side of I-215, according to a statement from the San Police Department Bernardino.

Arriving officers spoke with the victim, who told them that her “ex-husband followed her onto the highway, where he got out of his vehicle and shot her several times,” the statement said. communicated.

The victim was unharmed during the shooting, but police noted that there were several bullet holes in the side of his vehicle.

Nearly an hour later, around 1:15 p.m., officers attempted to arrest the suspect near Baseline Street and Mt. Vernon Avenue.

“The suspect abruptly exited the vehicle, armed with a loaded firearm, and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the SBPD statement said.

Officers recovered a firearm and holster, as well as an additional loaded magazine from the man's front pocket, according to the release.

The suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital where he remained in critical condition Sunday evening.

Investigators identified the suspect as Michael Vargas, a 48-year-old man from San Bernardino. A check of his records showed he had an out-of-county warrant for domestic violence, which stemmed from a previous incident with the same victim, police said.

The case is still ongoing.
