Salvation Army funeral shooting in Blue Island leaves 3 injured – NBC Chicago

Several law enforcement agencies were searching Friday evening for several gunmen who opened fire outside a funeral at the Blue Island Salvation Army Community and Worship Center, wounding three people, authorities said.

The shooting was reported around 3:30 p.m. at the center, 2900 W. 127th St., Blue Island City Administrator Tom Wogan said. Authorities said several gunmen in a vehicle stopped and began shooting near the front of the building, which was being rented for a funeral service.

One of the people present, who had a concealed carry permit, opened fire in response, Wogan said.

Three people were shot, including one who was rushed to the hospital in serious condition. The other two victims were in minor condition.

Police were scouring the area for evidence and surveillance video in hopes of obtaining information that could identify the shooters. Portions of 127th Street remained closed Friday evening due to the heavy police presence.

The eastbound and westbound lanes of the street were closed between Sacramento and California avenues, according to a social media post from Total Traffic and Weather Network.

Another part of the street was closed between Kedzie and Maple avenues, Total Traffic said.

The motive for the shooting remained unclear Friday evening.
